Robert F. Babcock

Law Practice – Mr. Babcock is a principal in the Salt Lake City law firm of Babcock Scott & Babcock. His practice is concentrated on construction contract claims and litigation in both public and private proceedings. In addition to his legal degree, Mr. Babcock is a civil engineer. He has represented owners, architects and engineers, general contractors, subcontractors and suppliers in the Intermountain West.

Construction Background – The son of a professional engineer, Mr. Babcock has long been involved with construction. He worked for a materials testing and inspection laboratory in his native southern California as well as a Utah construction company.

  • Served as treasurer and board member of the Utah Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors.
  • Served on the suppliers committee of the Utah Chapter of the Associated General Contractors.
  • Served on two committees helping prepare new construction contract documents- one for the Utah State Division of Facilities Construction and Management and the other for the Utah Chapter of the American Public Works Association for use by the public entities in Utah.
  • Served for several years on the Board of Directors of the Apartment Association of Utah and served as the President in 1983.
  • Received the Associated General Contractors’, Utah Chapter, Service to the Industry Award in January 1989.
  • Received the Outstanding Service to the Utah Construction Industry Award in February, 1994, from the Utah Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors.

  • Spoken on project scheduling, construction claims, arbitration of construction disputes, differing site conditions, mechanic’s lien and bond law, and pitfalls of specification writing.
  • Spoken on behalf of Associated General Contractors, Associated Builders and Contractors, the Construction Specifications Institute, the Utah Surety Association, the American Arbitration Association, the Intermountain Utility Contractors Association, and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
  • Represented a client before the Utah Supreme Court, where the Court determined the Utah arbitration statute was constitutional.
  • Focuses on construction contract claims and litigation in both public and private proceedings.
  • Successfully resolved many disputes through alternative dispute resolution whether arbitration or mediation.
